COLOR SYMBOLISM



The use and selection of color when creating traditional pysanky is very important, as
each color has it's own meaning. The following is a summary of colors commonly used
and what they mean.





WHITE





Purity, innocence and birth.



BLACK and WHITE





Mourning, respect to spirits.



YELLOW





Symbol of light, purity, youth, happiness and hospitality. Sun, stars, moon.



LIGHT GREEN





Purity, innocence and birth. Spring, new growth and hope, breaking bondage, freshness and wealth.



BLUE





Good health, truth, and fidelity, sky, air.



ORANGE





Strength and endurance, the everlasting sun.



PINK





Success.



RED





Happiness, hope or passion. The sun, happiness in life.



RED and WHITE





Respect, protection from evil powers.



DARK RED





Harvest color, denotes the gathering of the fruit in the fall.



ROYAL BLUE





Royal color, higher life and trust.




BROWN





Mother earth and her gifts, also a color of the harvest. Earth, harvest, generosity




DARK GREEN





Bountifulness, hope and the victory of life after death.




PURPLE





Royalty, fasting, faith, patience and trust.




BLACK
